Description:
The Volunteer USA Foundation's family literacy initiative has announced the availability of planning grants for existing literacy programs interested in serving as a Volunteer USA Foundation family literacy academy. The purpose of these grants will be to provide planning and training to programs so they can serve as academies for the 2011 school year. Planning grants range from $1,000 to $5,000, and in the following year approved programs may then compete for matching grants between $25,000 and $100,000. Programs must serve families and/or children with hearing impairments, have nonprofit 501(c)(3) status, and be located in the southern United States. Priority will be given to programs in Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, and Louisiana. Description: Big Green grants - For environmentally friendly projects that encourage youths to take care of the environment, be active, live healthier and engage in community service. Funder: Nickelodeon. Eligibility: Elementary and middle schools and after-school community-based organizations with 501(c)(3) status serving kids age 5 to 15 years. Deadline: Dec. 31, 2009 Amount: $2,500 or $5,000 each. The latter amount must be matched one to one.

Description: Helping Outreach Programs Expand (HOPE): To help grassroots community- and faith-based victim service organizations and coalitions improve their outreach and services to crime victims, through support of program development, networking, coalition building and service delivery. Funder: U.S. Department of Justice. Eligibility: Organizations and coalitions operating for at least one year that have not received federal Victims of Crime Act grant funding and that have annual operating budgets of $50,000 or less. Deadline: Open. Amount: $10,000 each.

Description:  AmeriCorps State programs engage AmeriCorps members in direct service and capacity-building activities to address unmet community needs. Local programs design service activities for a team of members who have each committed to one year of service. AmeriCorps programs support local community efforts by addressing education, environmental, homeland security, public safety or other human needs. Sample activities include tutoring and mentoring youth, assisting crime victims, building homes, and restoring parks. AmeriCorps members also mobilize community volunteers and strengthen the capacity of the organizations where they serve.
